Latisse, a well-known eyelash enhancer, may help regrow hair in places other than just the lashes, according to a recent report by ABC news. Since gaining FDA approval in 2008, Latisse dramatically helps thousands of patients grow thicker and longer lashes. Now, some physicians prescribe the drug to patients with thinning scalp hair.

Dr. Alan Bauman, a hair restoration specialist, reports increased growth in about 70 percent of his patients. He is quick to point out that the drug is not a miracle cure, and is best suited for patients who still have some hair left.

Allergan, the manufacturer of Latisse, plans to begin clinical trials to evaluate Bimatoprost, the active ingredient in Latisse, for treatment of male and female baldness.

It’s one of the most frequently asked questions during my consultations. Everyone wants to know what the scar is going to look like. Truth be told, there are many things that determine what a scar will ultimately look like – genetics, environmental factors such as sun exposure and smoking, and surgical technique. According to some recently published data, the use of many over the counter scar products may be of little or no benefit.

A study performed by Christopher Miller, M.D., from the University of Pennsylvania, evaluated the 20 best-selling scar reduction products found on drugstore.com. Of all the “active ingredients” – from purified water,  glycerin, onion extract, polyethylene glycol, vitamin A, Vitamin C – only silicone gel actually showed improvement.

So where does this leave the scar? At the Laser Center of Maryland we treat all incisions – no matter the size- with multiple pulsed dye laser sessions. This laser flattens the scar and reduces redness in as little as 2 treatments! We typically treat incisions at two and six weeks after surgery to minimize any hypertrophic scars.  This unique treatment is standard care for all of our surgical procedures!

I am often asked how “Plastic Surgery” came to be called “Plastic Surgery.” It’s a good question, especially because today we use products such as Botox, Juvaderm and Silicone breast implants – none of which contain plastic!

The English word plastic is derived from the Greek word plastikos, meaning to mold or shape. It actually has no association with the synthetic polymer that we call plastic! The phrase “Plastic Surgery” was coined by Carl Ferdinand Von Graefe, in Germany in 1818, and referred to surgeons who would reshape or mold tissues. Although this was the origin of the phrase “plastic surgery,” its beginnings may be traced back to 2000BC to physicians in India. During this time, the nose would often be cut off, either in war or as punishment for crimes. Surgeons actually began reconstructing the nose using a wax like substance and covering it with skin from the forehead or cheek.

The field expanded greatly during the 20^th Century, in large part due to the injuries sustained during World Wars I and II. It was here that procedures involving burn and facial reconstruction evolved. Plastic Surgery continued to develop, and subspecialties within the field were born, including hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, microsurgery and reconstructive surgery.

Today, what most people refer to as plastic surgery (breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, face lift etc) is really a subspecialty, which is more frequently and more appropriately being referred to as Cosmetic Surgery. Specifically, this involves surgery or procedures which maintain, restore or enhance ones appearance.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has recently offered its prediction for cosmetic surgery trends in 2011. Here’s some of what is trending up for the new year.

Prolipo

Zeltiq

Zeltiq, a non-invasive body contouring and fat reduction device, has just been given FDA approval for body shaping. Since getting approval, we’ve seen a substantial increase in interest. In fact, Good Morning America recently did a spotlight segment on Zeltiq.

Zeltiq is the first FDA approved non-invasive alternative to liposuction. There are no incisions, no down time and no compression garments to wear after the procedure! Zeltiq works by slowly freezing fat cells, causing them to break open. The fat cells are destroyed and your body’s own helper cells eliminate the broken down fat over a period of weeks.

Laser liposuction works in a different fashion. Through small incisions, a laser is passed into the fatty tissue, and the fat is heated until the fat cells are destroyed. Then, through the same small incisions, the broken down fat cells are suctioned out. A second laser wavelength is then directed at the undersurface of the skin, causing tightening. Most laser liposuction cases are performed with local anesthesia or a small amount of sedation. Most clients return to work within 24 to 48 hours!

Both treatments are effective at body sculpting. Patients who need a no down time solution for stubborn fat prefer Zeltiq. Those who have a little more to lose, or have some laxity in their skin, will do better with Prolipo.

One of the most common questions I get regarding breast implants is: “will I have to replace them in ten years?” In general, “no.” Currently two companies provide FDA approved breast implants-Allergan and Mentor (see press release).

Both companies recommend replacing implants every ten years. However, if the implants are not leaking or ruptured, and you are happy with how they look and feel, there is no need to replace them. Many women have implants that they had put in over ten years ago that still look terrific!

A leak from a saline (salt water) implant gets noticed quickly because the breast rapidly shrinks in size. The body absorbs the saline. In contrast, a silicone rupture is more difficult to detect. For this reason the companies recommend an MRI every three years to make sure that the silicone implant is intact. Leak rates are slightly less than 1% a year. The risk of leakage ten years after implantation is below10%. Both companies give lifetime warranties on their implants, and will replace them if a leak or a rupture occurs.
